Dosimeter - FAQ's page. What is a Dosimeter used for? To detect and measure gamma and x-ray radiation. Who needs a Dosimeter? Anybody that potentially could be exposed to radiation levels which are above normal background radiation. What is background radiation? This means radiation from cosmic sources (mostly the sun) and naturally occurring radioactive material. This does not include sources of radiation from radioactive materials regulated by Nuclear agencies. What is radiation measured in? Roentgens (R) What is a Roentgen? It means the special unit of exposure. One roentgen equals 258 millionths of a coulomb per kilogram of air. What is exposure? Being exposed to ionizing radiation or to radioactive material.
